2019 Kia vehicle safety award winners
The 2019 model year has been a great one for Kia. It has brought a variety of redesigned Kia vehicles with new tech in addition to top safety awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In fact, Kia was one of the top three automotive brands to earn the most 2019 safety awards from the IIHS. A total of eight Kia models earned the IIHS’ coveted safety awards at a time when the Institute implemented more stringent requirements.
So which Kia vehicles earned safety awards? Kia models that earned the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick Plus award include the 2019 Forte, Niro, Niro Plug-In Hybrid, Optima and Sorento. Models that earned the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick award include the 2019 Rio sedan, Soul and Cadenza.
What changes did the IIHS make to its safety ratings for 2019?
In order to be eligible to be chosen to receive the IIHS’ highest award, the Top Safety Pick+, vehicles must now earn a “good” rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test.
Previously, vehicles only needed an “acceptable” or a “good” rating. The other requirements remain the same and require a “good” rating in all other crashworthiness tests, a “good” rating in headlight testing and an “advanced” or “superior” rating in the front crash prevention test.

Other award criteria include a “good” rating in all other crashworthiness tests, an “advanced” or “superior” rating for front crash prevention and a “good” or “acceptable” headlight test rating.
